Her First fish !

Years ao while wintering in balmy La Manzanilla , Jalisco Mexico , my wife and I made friends with the efferfescent Jan G , a very spirited and talented artisan in re-purposed materials and an all around fine friend . I had been frequently bringing her fresh fish for a few years and at one point had mentioned to her that I caught a majority of my catch on flies and she became interested in seeing those flies , which led me to making her a pair of ear rings , ( minus the barbs) which she wore frequently . One day she told me that she wanted to go fishing with me so we set a fishing date with Gerardo Kosonoy as our guide/captain out of Barra de Navidad and headed out to the blue water . Jan wore her fly earrings for good luck so when we stopped near a boil of birds and bait we started slow trolling ( 3-4 mph) with my flies and handed Jan a 30-80 Calstar rod with a Shimano TLD 30 2-speed reel . It wasn’t five minutes before Jan yelled she had one on And sure enough she did . We had neglected to coach Jan on what to do once she had one on , so we quickly explained the principle of pump and retrieve which she awkwardly caught onto and worked the tuna up close to the panga where unfortunately she ran out of strength so we had to take the rod and bring it to the gaff . She had the first big game yellowfin tuna of her life and it was a bright delicious 30 pounder .

Now we all love sushi/ sashimi , so this tuna was headed to the bragging rights table , our stomachs , with a bit left over to share with friends . Once again , the salt water flies made the day !
